- Rubens, Peter Paul
- (6/28/1577 Siegen-5/30/1640 Antwerp) (Netherlands)Painter, art collector, and diplomat. Trained under Verhaegt, van Noort, and van Veen, he also traveled to Italy and was influenced by Tintoretto, Titian, and Corregio. Perhaps the most important artist of the Dutch Baroque period, in addition he was an influential diplomat, an art dealer, and a very successful businessman. Known for the voluptuousness of the women he depicted, a descriptive term — Rubenesque — has derived from his preference for the zaftig female. His sensuous use of color also emphasized the eroticism of his paintings.Reproductions: Christ with Mary Magdalene; c1620; Webb, 1975: p. 126 .
